Paper, ink, wooden planks - How do energies circulate inside, through and around us? When does it turn into power, tension, pressure and stress?
Visiting the European arts scene over a couple of months, we crossed paths with movements of #metoo, decolonization, intersectionality, anti-patriarchy and also observed some artists from Global South step down from the stage in Europe, being angry and upset with the art institutions they were invited to. There seems to be a lot of tension going on and for what we could sense a lot of power struggles with very strong vibrations that seem to range far back into their colonial history. A lot of people in the arts also like to speak with a lot of “-isms”. It reminds me of a Thai artist-friend who once asked: “Did you also notice how in the West, many people need identity to exist?” How can those energies be contained, constrained or concentrated so that they accumulate power? How come “conceptual art” is so popular and dominates the biennales? What do they mean when saying to think out of the box, but then another concept or box is created?
[power ranges] is an installation that circulates a series of power dynamics, that can be felt inside as well as outside. This analogue and sensorial construction materializes the tension that exists between ourselves and everything around us. Depending on different roles and positions we play in the world, social concepts & mechanisms produce, structure, accumulate and distribute power between those roles; state & citizen, developed & underdeveloped, rich & poor, employer & employee, husband & wife, parents & children, older & younger generation, humans & animals, people & plants etc... On the other hand, life with its elements also play a part in the circumstances that entour our worlds, with life moving beyond roles, transgressing all categories and flowing outside borders... into the universe. Life swirls its energies into infinite dynamics and its movements can be even more powerful than any worldly structure that tries to order it. [power ranges] invites the visitor to enter into its circle and sense the fragility of structure & movement as well as the power of fix & flux.
