Vermont Studio Center

2018

80 Pearl St, Johnson, Vermont, United States of America

For one month, I was selected as an artistic resident at Vermont Studio Center (VSC) in the US. The green environments melted and had a very calming impact on me. There were about 60 other fellow-artists in residency from different disciplines, hosted in different houses, like an artist village. Johnson is a small town and had one pizza place with karaoke on Saturdays, that gathered the local village population together with the artists. I feel so at home, knowing about 90% of the people around on those evenings out.

It is very rare for me to have full time dedication to just be have time for explorations in art, and to be in the company of so many different artists from all over the world, in one place. Each day, I work on different projects as they all need pace in the process; while drawing for [nature's force], I met Wei & Bruno who both work with ceramics and start to experiment with the material, connecting with the clay and molding feels like a very forceful and at the same time delicate way of forcing a shape on the clay. So, I just explore touch and sensation with the soft, but cold material. Working with wood has a similar approach, quite aggressive to cut, sculpt or manipulate its original form. I also realize why I like to work with found materials like objects and assemble them than working directly on raw or living material.

In between, I like to have walks and pass by other fellows' studios, see how they are and what they're doing. It's a great daily rhythm, with everyone and everything around.

The Vermont Studio Center (VSC) is a non-profit organization located in the town of Johnson in the U.S. state of Vermont. VSC conducts the largest fine arts and writing residency program in the U.S., with a significant population of international artists in residency. The center operates one- to three-month residencies, with 52 fine artists and writers in the residency program at a time. The programs are highly selective and include a broad variety of media, cultures, and ages. The center was founded in 1984
